Gaziantep and the southeast

The southeast is the Turkey most visitors never see: pistachio groves, a mosaic museum of world rank, and the oldest temple complex ever found. Gaziantep is the food capital of the country, and it knows it.

Why Gaziantep

  • The Zeugma Mosaic Museum — the Gypsy Girl mosaic and an extraordinary collection rescued from the Euphrates. One of the best museums in Turkey.
  • The food. Antep pistachio, baklava, kebab culture, and a cuisine that locals will tell you — correctly — is the best in the country.
  • The old city — the castle, the covered bazaar (Zincirli Bedesten), and the coppersmiths’ quarter.
  • Şirehan and the hans — restored caravanserais doing service as cafés and shops.

The day trips that matter

Day tripFrom GaziantepWhy
Göbekli Tepe2 hrs (Şanlıurfa)11,000-year-old temple site — the reason many people come
Şanlıurfa2 hrsBalıklıgöl, the old bazaars, and a very different city
Halfeti1 hrA village partly drowned by the Euphrates dam; boat trips
Rumkale1.5 hrsA fortress on the river, reached by boat
Yesemek1 hrAn open-air Hittite sculpture workshop

Practical notes

  • It is hot and dry. Spring and autumn are the only comfortable seasons; summer is genuinely hard work.
  • It is conservative. Dress more modestly here than on the coast — particularly outside the city centre and at religious sites.
  • Flights connect Gaziantep (GZT) to Istanbul and Ankara directly.
  • Combine with Mardin if you have the time — the old town is remarkable.

When to come

April, May, October and November. Ramadan is also an interesting time to be here if food culture is your reason for coming, though daytime eating is restricted and hours shift.

If your trip includes treatment

Gaziantep is not a treatment destination and we would not pretend otherwise. It is the reward end of a trip, or a standalone culinary and archaeological journey.
